Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure – structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving – tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids.
Massage types types can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearm, feet, or a massage device. Massage can promote relaxation and well-being.
The word comes from the French massage "friction of kneading", or from Arabic massage meaning "to touch, feel" or from Latin massa meaning "mass, dough", or from the Greek verb μάσσω (massō) "to handle, touch, to work with the hands, to knead dough."
In professional settings massage clients are treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor, while in amateur settings a general purpose surface like a bed or floor is more common.
Aquatic massage and bodywork is performed with recipients submersed or floating in a warm-water therapy pool.
The massage subject may be fully or partially clothed or unclothed.

However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed. This instability increases the likelihood of joint injury, often leading to a degenerative process in which tissues break down and no longer function well.
What is pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother's needs. It is also called pre-natal massage.
How is pregnancy massage different from regular massage?
The mother's body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby. Also, some massage techniques, such as deep tissue work, cannot be used. Certain areas of the body should be avoided during pregnancy.
What are the benefits of pregnancy massage?
Why should I go for pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints. It's a popular complementary therapy during pregnancy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited. Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy. Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.
Eglinton Way RMT is certified in pregnancy massage. That means that we have had specialized training, and know what is safe for the mother and baby.
Myofascial release (or MFR) is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain.
This alternative medicine therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles.
Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscle. Fascia supports and protects these structures.
Osteopathic theory proposes that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow.
Sports Related Injuries
Sports injuries are injuries that occur in athletic activities. They can result from acute trauma, or from overuse of a particular body part.
Injuries can include:
- Contusion or bruise - damage to small blood vessels which causes bleeding within the tissues.
- Strain - trauma to a muscle due to overstretching and tearing of muscle fibers
- Sprain - an injury in a joint, caused by the ligament being stretched beyond its own capacity
- Wound - abrasion or puncture of the skin
- Bone fracture - break(s) in the bone
Overuse and repetitive stress injury problems associated with sports include:
- Runner's knee
- Tennis elbow
In Bamboo massage, hollow bamboo canes are used a massage tool, either warmed or at room temperature. They can be used with or without hot stones.
The bamboo cane replaces the therapist's hands, and it is used to give a deep, firm massage. The cane is held by the therapist and rolled over the muscle with the same strokes they would use with their hands. The muscle is then kneaded, which assists in the release of tension and easing of knots. Massage practitioners often use the whole arm from elbow to wrist, and the use of the bamboo cane replaces this technique.
Another use of bamboo in massage would be bamboo cupping jars in Traditional Chinese medicine.
This technique works in a very similar way to stone massage. Hands are used to work over the muscles and the cane is used to focus on knots. As the cane is used instead of the hand, various techniques and modalities can incorporate the use of bamboo canes. This can have the benefit of less stress to the practitioner's hands and arms.
A body scrub is basically a method used to scrub away dead skin cells from the body. It exfoliates and hydrates your skin, leaving it smooth and soft. A suspension of coarse granules (apricot, walnut, oatmeal, sea salt) in a semi-liquid medium or gel (often resembling the consistency of body butter or a moisturizing lotion) is used.
This is not a massage, it is a treatment. Normally, the body replaces its skin cells every 28 days or so. Helping it rid of these dead cells makes for a healthier skin.
How we Perform a Body Scrub
- You will start face-down on a massage table that is covered with a towel, a sheet or a thin piece of plastic.
- The therapist will start by gently rubbing the exfoliant on your back, the backs of your arms, and the backs of your legs and feet. You may be draped with a towel so only the part he/she is working on is exposed. Then you turn over and he/she does the other side.
- When the therapist is finished, you will be rinsed thoroughly to clear all the little granules. You will be dried off and the therapist will apply body lotion or oil.
A hot stone massage is a massage that uses smooth, flat, and heated rocks placed at key points on the body.
Stones are placed into an electric slow-cooker or a purpose-built device which is filled with water. The water is typically heated to 30-35 degrees Celsius (122-127 degrees Fahrenheit).
Once the stones have heated sufficiently, some are placed onto specific points on the body (such as the back, hands, etc.) and others are held by the massage therapist and used to work the muscles.
Certain styles of stone massage also incorporate chilled stones into the routine. These stones are usually marble, and are placed into a bowl of iced water before use.

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin to promote healing. In GeeLing Rejuvenation Center, patients are recommended to receive 1 to 2 treatments per week, 8 to 10 treatments as a course. One acupuncture session normally last 60 minutes.
Acupuncture in Chinese means “Needles and Moxibustion”, Moxibustion is a TCM therapy using moxa (mugwort herb). It plays an important role in TCM with practitioners usually age and grind up the mugwort to a fluff; or process it further into a cigar-shaped stick. Moxa can be used indirectly with acupuncture needles, or be burned over the patient's skin with a little distance to help healing. This modality will be provided only as a part of an acupuncture treatment, no additional charge for receiving this service.
An ancient therapy with a local suction is created on the skin using glass cups and heat (fire) or mechanical devices, which mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. This modality can be provided as a part of an acupuncture treatment or as a separate treatment.
Scraping (Gua Sha)
An ancient therapy using a well polished water buffalo horn, or jade to scrape away disease by allowing the disease to escape as sandy-looking objects through the skin" This modality can be provided as a part of an acupuncture treatment or as a separate treatment.
Also called ear Acupunctureis based on the idea that the ear is a micro-system of the entire body represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear. Ailments of the entire body are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively. Effect of a normal body acupuncture treatment usually lasts less than 2 days and Canadian patients are normally not able to attend acupuncture treatment for more than twice a week, therefore, GRC provides continue stimulation of ear acupuncture points to maintain the effect with the natural herbal seeds being taped onto the auricle. This modality can be provided as a part of an acupuncture treatment or as a separate treatment.
